CHAN 2024 Draw: Harambee Stars Land Morocco, Angola in Group of Death

The 2024 Africa Nations Championships group-stage draw took place on Wednesday, January 15, in a glitzy ceremony at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
It will be the first time in the tournament’s young history that three countries will co-host it. The tournament was initially scheduled for February, but it was postponed to August to give the host countries more time to improve their infrastructure. Group A, B, C will have five teams each, while Group D will have four teams
Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania were seeded automatically as the hosts were assigned A1, B1 and C1. Senegal, the defending champions, were assigned D1. Two more teams will join the already-qualified 17 teams and were earmarked as Q1 and Q2 in the draw.
Harambee Stars were first drawn against Morocco, eliciting sharp reactions from the crowd inside the Tsavo Ball Room at KICC. Angola, DR Congo, and Zambia completed the group.
McDonald Mariga, who was one of the draw assistants, admitted that it was the Group of Death for Kenya. He is currently the Deputy President of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF). Morocco and DR Congo have won the tournament twice, setting up an interesting prospect for the home team in August.
