Jubilee Party has announced that former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i will be its presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election.
Can Fred Matiang'i defeat William Ruto in 2027?
Speaking on Saturday, January 25 in Narok county, Jubilee Party secretary
general Jeremiah Kioni expressed confidence that Matiang'i would defeat
President William Ruto in 2027.
The former president Uhuru Kenyatta-led party urged its supporters to spread
Matiang'i's candidature countrywide, adding that with a united opposition, Ruto
has minimal chances of being re-elected.
We as the Jubilee party have our own candidate, Fred Matiang'i. He will face off with the others to ensure Ruto goes home. If we all agree to come together and vote, Ruto will not win even if he appoints Kimani Ichung'wah or Kamket as IEBC chairperson. We must agree that all his supporters are the wrong people for this country," Kioni stated
Kioni also urged Kenyans to embrace minority communities, asking the Mount Kenya
Region officials to step aside and let another community in power.
We want a president from a small community. Let us step aside and let someone else in. Let us unite and vote as one," he statedWho will partner with Fred Matiang'i in 2027 ?
Kisii senator Richard Onyonka said the Gusii region had resolved to field the former Interior Cabinet secretary as their presidential candidate in the 2027 elections.Speaking in his county on Friday, January 24, the senator argued that his region had been isolated for a time under successive governments and that it is, therefore, their turn to try one of their own for the top seat.Whilst the senator believes that Matiang'i stands a higher chance in the election, he said they would seek support from other influential leaders. He said they would seek partnerships with traditional regional kingpins, such as former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua and former president Uhuru Kenyatta.
2027 presidential successionIn the meantime, the 2027 race to State House portends to be an interesting one as groups and figures come out with the bid to flush conventional politicians out of the power equation. For decades, the elections have revolved around immediate post-independent figures like Raila, William Ruto, Kalonzo, Musalia Mudavadi and Uhuru, among others. With the 2024 Gen Z uprising, it is likely that the routine order might be defeated as the youths vow to mobilise their numbers to change the political status quo. Besides Matiang'i, others who have presented themselves for the race include activists Okiya Omtatah and Morara Kebaso.
