Health Ministry Unveils First Fully Digitized Rural Hospital at Balambala in Garissa County

𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚, 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚 -𝟏𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 - The Ministry of Health has today achieved a key milestone in Kenya’s health digitization journey with the activation of the Health Management Information System (HMIS) at Balambala Sub-County Hospital in Garissa County. The launch coincided with the conclusion of a three-day free medical and surgical camp in the region.

Balambala Sub-County Hospital is now the first rural Sub-County facility to be fully digitized, reinforcing the country’s commitment to scale up technology-enabled health systems across all counties, irrespective of community disparities.

Aligned with the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda, the Ministry has equipped the hospital with 40 digital devices and trained 35 healthcare workers to accelerate the rollout of digital systems. This reform will enable healthcare providers to securely access patient records, strengthen care coordination, minimize medical errors, and eliminate quack practices within the sector.

Presiding over the camp, Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale also toured the refurbished and expanded Level 4 facility, which is expected to greatly improve access to healthcare for rural communities.

The medical camp also advanced Kenya’s health financing reforms through the Social Health Authority (SHA). To date, 1,786 residents have been registered under SHA, representing 19% of Garissa County’s 171,730 population. Additionally, 1,994 patients received services during the camp, including medical consultations, wellness check-ups, and health education.

The Free Medical and Surgical Camp was organized by the Garissa County Government in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to expand access to quality healthcare services.
