Speaking at the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, the first since its National Delegates Conference, Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni confirmed that Matiang'i's application to run for president under the party's banner had been unanimously approved.
“We have received and formally accepted Dr. Fred Matiang’i’s application for his presidential bid, and the NEC has agreed that he carries our flag,” said Mr. Kioni.
Mr Kioni also announced that Dr. Matiang'i had been appointed Deputy Party Leader, putting him at the centre of Jubilee's leadership structure.
“We have appointed Dr. Fred Matiang’i as our Deputy Party Leader going forward,” Kioni said, adding that the former CS would represent Jubilee “in the united opposition.”
The Secretary General revealed that the meeting also addressed key issues related to party structure and strategy, with a focus on improving grassroots operations.
“We were able to deal with key issues of structure and strategy that we want to take as a party. We now move out to revamp our party, open branches, and reach out to our members and new members,” Kioni stated, noting that more activities will be announced in the coming weeks.
The NEC also filled several vacant leadership positions. Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama was named Whip of the National Assembly, while Senator James Lomenen will serve as Senate Whip.
In a show of solidarity, the party extended its condolences to the family of Mama Ida Odinga, wife of ODM leader Raila Odinga.
“Jubilee Party extends our condolences to the family of Mama Ida Odinga. We stand with the family,” said Kioni.
Mr Kioni also hinted at a potential review of the party’s relationship with the Azimio la Umoja Coalition, warning that quitting the coalition could have “legal implications” for some members of Parliament.
