Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has assured Kenyans that the government has put in place stringent measures to prevent the deadly Ebola virus from entering the country through its borders.
Speaking during Eid al-Adha celebrations on Wednesday, Duale said travellers arriving from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighbouring Uganda are undergoing enhanced health screening and verification before being allowed into Kenya.
The Health CS noted that the Ministry of Health has intensified surveillance at all entry points, including airports and border crossings, following rising Ebola-related deaths in the DRC.
“Over 200 people have so far lost their lives in DRC. As a government and as a ministry, we have put all measures in place. Along our borders, we have installed scanners at airports, and we are conducting very serious screening of all passengers entering our country, especially those coming from Uganda or those who were in transit through Kinshasa. Everyone will undergo strict screening and verification,” said Duale.
The government says the heightened vigilance is aimed at protecting Kenyans from a possible outbreak, with health officials on high alert to quickly detect and respond to any suspected cases. Authorities have also urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with health screening procedures at all points of entry.
