Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has officially left the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), marking a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Sakaja was formally received into ODM on Monday, November 2, at the party's headquarters, Chungwa House, in Nairobi. The reception was led by ODM Deputy Party Leader and Kisii Governor Simba Arati, alongside National Chairperson Gladys Wanga and other senior party officials.

The move signals Sakaja's intention to seek re-election as Nairobi Governor under the ODM ticket, ending months of speculation surrounding his political future and growing indications that he was considering leaving UDA.

Speaking during the occasion, Sakaja said he was joining ODM with experience, commitment, energy and a strong desire to contribute to the party's political agenda ahead of the next general election.

He emphasised that the country's next political chapter should not be measured merely by electoral victories but by the tangible transformation of people's lives.

Raila Odinga's Influence on Sakaja's Decision

Sakaja also linked his decision to join ODM to his longstanding relationship with the party's late founding leader, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

According to the governor, Raila had encouraged him to join ODM and had shared his vision of maintaining Nairobi's bold political identity.

Sakaja indicated that he remains committed to the leadership principles and political ideals associated with the former Prime Minister.

His remarks highlight the political relationship he maintained with Raila despite previously belonging to a different political formation.

From UDA to ODM: A Significant Political Realignment

Sakaja was elected Nairobi Governor in August 2022 on a UDA ticket after defeating Jubilee candidate Polycarp Igathe.

His departure from the ruling party follows months of political engagements and growing calls from ODM leaders and supporters for him to formally join the Orange party.

The political shift became more apparent during an ODM memorial event held at Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi on Saturday, October 31, 2026. During the gathering, Sakaja sought the views of Nairobi residents on whether he should remain in UDA, join ODM or consider the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

The response from sections of the crowd appeared to favour ODM, prompting the governor to ask the party leadership to guide him on the way forward.

His formal reception at Chungwa House has now confirmed the political transition.

2027 Nairobi Governorship Race Takes Shape

Sakaja's entry into ODM is expected to reshape political competition for Nairobi's gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.

However, joining the party does not automatically guarantee him its gubernatorial ticket. He will still need to navigate the party's nomination process amid other political figures with ambitions for the same position.

Among the notable potential contenders is Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, associated with the Mwananchi Party, as well as Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri and other political figures seeking to influence Nairobi's leadership.

The emerging contest is likely to attract considerable attention as political parties and aspirants begin positioning themselves ahead of the next general election.

What Sakaja's Move Means for Nairobi Politics

Sakaja's defection represents more than a change of political affiliation. It introduces a new political calculation within ODM and could influence the party's strategy in Nairobi, one of Kenya's most politically significant counties.

His ability to consolidate support among ODM members, maintain relationships across political formations and demonstrate effective county leadership will be important factors in determining his political prospects.

Ultimately, Nairobi residents will be looking beyond party affiliations and political alliances to issues of service delivery, infrastructure development, urban planning, drainage, waste management and improved public services.

As the 2027 General Election approaches, Sakaja's move to ODM sets the stage for an increasingly competitive political contest in the capital.
